How to Elope in Leavenworth, WA [Full Elopement Guide]

Post Summary: This is a complete guide to eloping in Leavenworth, Washington, including the best places for a Leavenworth wedding ceremony, cozy A-frame cabin and luxury resort recommendations, and activities to make your day as epic as possible.

Where is Leavenworth?

Leavenworth is one of the most popular tourist destinations to visit in Washington State, and is unlike any other part of the state: it’s a unique, Bavarian-style village surrounded by alpine peaks, winding rivers, and dense forests. Essentially, the scenery around the town is to die for, what with its location in the Cascade Mountains of central Washington. Just 2 hours from Seattle, all you need to do is hop on US Highway 2, drive through the scenic Cascades (and probably make a stop or two to enjoy the views), and you’ll find yourselves in this cozy little village in the middle of the mountains—which honestly feels like its own little fairytale world more than it does a small town in Washington. The classic PNW mountain beauty does kind of give it away, though!

Why Elope in Leavenworth?

If your dream elopement involves the dreamy alpine vibes that Washington is so famous for, there’s honestly no better place to make it happen than Leavenworth. The diversity that the area has to offer is freaking unmatched; within a span of just a few miles, you can find riverside meadows, drool-worthy mountain views, lush wildflower fields, and dense, forested trails—all of which are a total dream come true for intimate adventure elopements. With access to endless epic hiking opportunities and outdoor adventures, Leavenworth seriously has something for everyone! Whether you’re looking for a multi-day backpacking trek through the backcountry trails, a moderate day hike that only takes a couple of hours, or a low-effort trail with minimal elevation gain and increased accessibility, you’ll be able to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Here’s just a BRIEF list of what Leavenworth has to offer for outdoor rec in the spring, summer, and fall seasons:

  • Hiking
  • Backpacking
  • Mountain biking
  • Camping
  • Rock climbing
  • Paddle boarding
  • Rafting & kayaking
  • Tubing
  • Horseback riding

And if you’re craving more of a winter vibe, you can enjoy some pretty dang incredible skiing, snowboarding, sledding, tubing, snowshoeing, even sleigh rides through the snow!

In addition to the diverse landscapes and year-round natural beauty of the Leavenworth area—from vibrant summer wildflowers all the way to snowy winter wonderlands—there are SO many cute cabins and cozy lodging options in town. Unlike some of Washington’s more iconic destinations (such as Mount Rainier National Park) where you have to drive a bit further to access a wider range of services & amenities, Leavenworth makes for a great home base during your elopement, offering amazing dining options, accommodations, and memorable experiences. And you’ll never be too far from your next adventure! You can cozy up in town in the evenings and head out into the mountains during the daytime for an elopement celebration with a little bit of everything.

Best Time of Year to Elope in Leavenworth

I don’t blame you if you’re having trouble choosing a time of year to elope in Leavenworth—after all, didn’t I just tell you how incredible it is year-round? Leavenworth is rare in that it’s gorgeous and accessible throughout all four seasons (depending on what activities you’re looking to include in your trip, of course). Because of its location in central Washington, Leavenworth doesn’t get nearly as much rain as the west side of the state; in fact, it actually receives 300 days of sunshine every year.

While every season offers its own unique pros and cons, my personal favorite time for Leavenworth elopements is late summer through early fall. Let’s dig into why these seasons have become my favorites after many years photographing elopements in the area!

Summer (July-September)

Experiencing Leavenworth in the summer is a dream come true, whether you’re a native Washingtonian, or it’s your first time visiting. With highs in the 70’s-80’s, the warm weather is perfect for making the most of peak hiking season—especially if you can time your adventures right and enjoy the dramatic, golden mountain sunsets. Temperatures have definitely risen in recent years, with some days getting up into the 90’s, so definitely be aware of the possibility of heat waves. If it’s too dry and hot to enjoy the scenery during the day, you’ll feel relieved by the cool nights and crisp air once you’re a little further into the mountains.

Fall (October-early November)

Early fall in Leavenworth is simply *chef’s kiss*, the trees and mountains painted in stunning autumn colors, trails quieting down after a busy summer, and alpine air getting crisper by the minute. The brilliant colors are absolutely worth exploring in slightly cooler temperatures, with average highs in the 40’s-60’s, but keep in mind that early snow IS possible at higher elevations.

Winter (late November-March)

While the warmer seasons are undoubtedly beautiful in Leavenworth, the town is actually most known for its holiday magic. The snow-covered rooftops, twinkling lights, and reindeer-pulled sleigh rides transform the village into a literal enchanted fairytale town, perfect for alllll the cozy cabin vibes and fun winter adventures. Temperatures are typically in the 20’s-30’s with lots of snow, so you won’t be able to head out on a hike—but the magical landscapes are amazing for snowshoe elopements!

Spring (April-June)

As the snowmelt fills the rivers after the cold winter months, Leavenworth begins to come alive again with blooming wildflowers, abundant greenery, and the occasional spring shower. Trails start to open up around this time, so if you’re okay sticking to lower elevations (at least, earlier in the season) and hiking in cooler temperatures (50’s-60’s during the day, with even cooler mornings), you’ll fall in love with these landscapes in the spring months.

Top Wedding Ceremony Locations in the Leavenworth Area

It’s always so difficult to narrow down just a few locations to recommend, but I want to make sure you don’t feel overwhelmed by too many choices right off the bat—so I’ve compiled a list of 10 of my favorite Leavenworth elopement locations to tell you about. Any of these locations would be a phenomenal pick for your special day; it all depends on the vibe you’re going for, your guest count, what activities you’d like to include, and more.

Icicle Creek / Icicle Gorge Trail

Icicle Creek and Icicle Gorge Trail are two amazing spots in Icicle Valley, perfect for couples who want to tie the knot somewhere that’s easy to access, with scenic riverside forests and dramatic cliffs galore. The trail follows a gentle loop along the banks of the Icicle River and is a super easy walk, great for guests of all ages and abilities.

Lake Wenatchee State Park

The elopement I’ve been featuring throughout this blog post took place at Lake Wenatchee State Park, which is clearly an absolutely stunning location with 10/10 lake views & forested trails on the eastern slopes of the Cascades. The vibrant blue of this water is to die for on a sunny day, and even looks quite enchanting on a foggy, misty day with clouds covering the mountain peaks. Plus, it’s super easy to access and doesn’t require any hiking to get to the main lakeside picnic area.

Colchuck Lake / The Enchantments

Colchuck Lake is by far one of the most spectacular alpine lakes in the Enchantments (and the entire state of Washington, tbh), boasting the prettiest turquoise waters you’ll ever see. Whether you head out on this 8-mile roundtrip hike or opt to explore a different part of the iconic Enchantments, you’ll need a permit if you decide to backpack overnight through the alpine wonderland.

Lake Valhalla

This glacial lake in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is located right near the famous Pacific Crest Trail, nestled beneath Lichtenberg Mountain and Mount McCausland. At approximately 7 miles roundtrip, this moderately-challenging trail is great for a day hike—especially in the late summer or early fall, when wildflowers are at their peak bloom and the brilliant autumn colors begin to shine.

Tumwater Canyon

Want to add a little thrill to your elopement day with a rock climbing adventure? Tumwater Canyon is the perfect place to do it, with a depth of nearly 3000 feet and a wide variety of climbing routes (as well as thrilling opportunities for whitewater rafting). Check out the 2.4-mile Tumwater Pipeline trail for an easy elopement day hike along the high waters, with amazing riverside views.

Blackbird Island

Blackbird Island is a scenic little waterfront park & natural area in Leavenworth, featuring multiple dog-friendly trails great for riverside walks, hikes, or bike rides! This is a fantastic choice if you don’t want to venture too far from downtown Leavenworth, as it’s super close and very easily accessible.

Snow Lakes Trail

The Snow Lakes trail is a popular backpacking trail that starts just off of Icicle Creek Road, and traverses 14 miles into the Enchantments. You could make this a (challenging) day hike, or turn it into an overnight backpacking trip if you have the necessary special-issue permit. Either way, the forested areas, wildlife, stunning alpine lakes, and picturesque views are so worth every step and every switchback!

Stevens Pass

Stevens Pass isn’t just for snowy, winter wonderland elopements—this mountain pass in the Cascade Range is just as magical in the summertime! Head out on a hike along the Pacific Crest Trail, a scenic chairlift ride with epic views of the Cascades, or walk around the peaceful nature trails.

Leavenworth Winter Sports Club / Ski Hill

The Leavenworth Ski Hill at Leavenworth Winter Sports Club is accessible year-round, but is especially gorgeous in the colder months with its snowy winter vibes. Set inside the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest not too far from Leavenworth, it’s a great option if you’re looking for a smaller ski area with just as much to offer as Stevens Pass.

Hidden meadows and riverside beaches

I have to keep some of my favorites a secret for my booked couples. . . so when the time comes to plan your own Leavenworth elopement, ask me about secret spots away from the crowds!

Legalities of Getting Married in Leavenworth

Next, let’s break down the legalities and logistics of getting married in Leavenworth, including permits, marriage licenses, and more.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Leavenworth?

It depends on where you want to hold your ceremony!

 — Public lands: No permit is needed for small ceremonies on public lands, like US Forest Service trails or picnic areas.

 — Popular trails/areas: If you’d like to elope in a popular area like the Enchantments, you’ll need a permit for camping or overnight stays.

 — Private land/wedding venues: Finally, some locations on private land, or popular wedding venues in Leavenworth, require advance booking and/or a permit—which I’m happy to help  you with.

Can You Bring Guests to a Leavenworth Elopement?

Yes, Leavenworth has plenty of accessible locations that would be great for a small group. 6-10 guests is ideal for keeping it intimate and low-impact; for bigger groups, you may want to consider booking a private lodge or cabin for your ceremony. I’ve listed out a few of my favorites later in this guide!

How Do You Legally Get Married in Leavenworth?

Leavenworth is part of Chelan County, but you can actually get your marriage license through any county in Washington. All you have to do is follow Washington State marriage laws, and get your license in the county that’s easiest for you—whether that’s Chelan, or if you’re local to WA, your home county. The fee for a marriage license in Chelan County is $57, plus an additional $3 for a certified copy of your marriage certificate.

Here’s how to obtain a marriage license in Washington for your Leavenworth elopement:

  1. Apply for your license through Chelan County (or any other county)
  2. Wait the mandatory 3-day waiting period
  3. Hire an officiant (I can recommend some, or I can also sign your license)
  4. Have two witnesses present (I can be one if I’m your photographer)
  5. Hold your ceremony within 60 days of obtaining your license
  6. Sign, file, and celebrate!

Pro tip: You can do the paperwork beforehand and treat your ceremony day as purely symbolic, too!

Leave No Trace & Elopement Etiquette in Leavenworth

As wilderness areas like the Cascades, the Enchantments, and the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest continue to get busier and busier, it’s more important now than ever to be intentional about minimizing your impact in these fragile areas. It’s our job to protect the terrain we’re exploring and leave it just as we found it (if not better), so that future couples like you can enjoy it, too!

Here are a few core principles we’ll want to keep in mind as we plan out your dream Leavenworth elopement (no matter where you choose to hold your ceremony):

  • Stay on marked trails and durable surfaces
  • Don’t pick wildflowers
  • Pack out all trash (no confetti or rice)
  • Keep noise low
  • Respect the wildlife and fellow adventurers
  • No décor setups, unless allowed at your ceremony spot

As a Leave No Trace certified photographer, I’ll be there to help guide you so your day leaves nothing behind but good memories. I definitely suggest reading through my Leave No Trace Elopement Guide for Adventure Couples to learn about how to apply LNT principles to your elopement, and to understand why it’s such a crucial part of eloping outdoors.
